So it looks like we aren’t the only kids on the block having to deal with bad addresses. Whether it be electronic or hand-written data, there continues to be this struggle with having to decipher poor input. For those familiar with evaluating address data quality, I’m sure you have run into addresses with junk data or descriptive addresses such as “the house down the street from the red barn” or just plain old addresses written in chicken scratch or as if by a doctor writing up a prescription. >Read more

In my role as a salesperson at Loqate, I’m frequently asked questions about the source or quality of our reference data. It’s usually in the form of “how do you guys do in [insert country name]? Or “how do you do against [insert competitor’s name] in [insert country name]. The above quote is attributed to W. Edwards Deming. No one can actually find that Deming actually said this. So let's imagine that he did say it for it has some lessons for address data quality. A few years ago, I was giving a presentation to a group about software engineering methods, procedures, and tools. An executive asked me if his group adopted some of these ideas, would his group become 25% more productive. >Read more

The only thing that would’ve made the Microsoft Build 2012 developer conference better was if the exhibitors each received complimentary Surfaces and Windows 8 mobile phones as well! All kidding aside, it was a pretty neat experience to visit the huge campus of the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, WA. It really was like a mini city of its own, with its mall-like stores and food court.  >Read more

Recently, a Loqate customer sent us a question about geocode accuracy codes returned by The Loqate Engine. The addresses were next to each other on the same street, but had three different codes. It doesn't seem to make sense that they would have different codes at first glance. Looking under the covers a bit at how geocodes and the corresponding accuracy codes are computed reveals why and when this happens. >Read more

Here at Loqate we pride ourselves on helping people make locations right. Every once in a while it helps to be in the right location. That's exactly what happened on September 21 around 11:30 am when the Space Shuttle Endeavour flew almost directly over the Loqate headquarters in San Bruno. The Loqate office cleared as we went outside to see a never again event. Juan Silva, one of the great customer support people, caught the shuttle carried by a 747. >Read more
